Now on Netflix: The Babysitter (2017)

The Babysitter (2017) - Directed by McG; Written by Brian Duffield; Starring Judah Lewis, Samara Weaving, Robbie Amell, Hana Mae Lee, Bella Thorne, Leslie Bibb, Ken Marino.

You know those movies that going into it you think it is going to be terrible, but then you watch it and it isn't, so you like it a lot more than how good it really is?

That's pretty much The Babysitter in a nutshell, which is luckily not a remake of the Alicia Silverstone movie from the mid 1990s that every guy my age saw, but was disappointed when it was awful. I knew nothing about this The Babysitter going into it other than Bella Thorne (You Get Me) in a cheerleading uniform on the poster. That probably lowered the expectations quite a bit, but what I found when I was watching it was something different.

It is a very B movie that knows its a B movie about a constantly scared 12-year-old named Cole (Judah Lewis) who still has a babysitter. Luckily for him, it is super hot, super cool Bee, played by Hugo Weaving's niece Samara Weaving. She loves everything about Cole, and they do the coolest things together, stuff that only really exists in movies.

But on the flip side, as Cole finds out, Bee has a pact with the devil and she needs sacrificial blood as well as his to carry out some kind of ceremony. Cole witnesses this one night when he sneaks out of his room to see if maybe she is fooling around with a boyfriend. Instead she stabs a dude with two knives in the head during a game of truth or dare with a bunch of friends.

From there, the movie is overly violent, really silly, and occasionally fun. It thinks it is a lot funnier than it actually is, but there are some genuine laughs throughout. It often aims to crack up 14-year-olds to its detriment (especially since this is a hard R), but there are moments there. And those are enough add up to you saying "hey, that's not awful".

The Babysitter is now streaming on Netflix.
