The lives affected by a young man's accident are explored in this French drama.

Director Katell Quillevere dips in and out of stories, all surrounding this young man who gets in a serious car accident while on the way home from a surfing trip with his friends. He is essentially dead, but he is being kept alive in the hopes that his organs can be donated someone in need. The doctors search for his parents to ask about the possibility, then have to find a match for one of his organs.

That someone in need is Claire, a mother with a degenerative heart condition. She is reluctant to go through with a heart transplant, but he two boys implore her to do it so they can still have her around.

Also explored is the doctors at both the hospital where the young man is being kept, as well as the transplant doctors who will perform the surgery.

Quillevere introduces us to numerous characters, some of which we only get one or two scenes with before they are gone. I understand the approach, but it definitely makes it seem like there could be scenes cut out and those characters don't even really need to be explored. But that approach is also interesting. It's definitely not a protagonist driven narrative, it's a kaleidoscope about life and death, and all the people surrounding this one event, that is tragic for one, but wondrous for another.

Heal the Living is now streaming on Netflix.
