Larry David said whenever he ended Curb Your Enthusiasm, he wouldn't tell anyone because of the backlash the Seinfeld finale received.

So it was easy to believe that maybe season eight, which ended in 2011, would have been it. It did have a sense of finality to it, and there was no plan to come back.

But fast forward to 2017, and Larry is back being irritated by everything. And it could have come back feeling stale. It had been six years, and he had already had eight seasons to really run through a lot of different things. There's only so much to mine after all.

However, David took those six years off to give it a break. To let things change, and him gather new, weird views on life. And he came up with a good idea for the season arc. Larry decides to put on a stage play about Salman Rushdie, which ends up getting a fatwa death sentence put on Larry.

That is the running story, though not every episode deal with that very much. It does generate some of my favorite things about the season, like Larry meeting with Rushdie and him coining the term for them as the Fatwa Boys. But there is still the awkward moments that Larry gets himself into, as well as all the people he angers, including Lin-Manuel Miranda which helps him with his play. It really hasn't missed a step, and even though there are some rich white guy problems to some of the jokes, it's still Larry, and that has definitely been missing the last six years.

All nine seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm are now streaming on HBO Now and HBO Go.
