TV Review: You're the Worst, Season 4 (2017)

You're the Worst, Season 4 (2017) - Created by Stephen Falk; Starring Chris Geere, Aya Cash, Desmin Borges, Kether Donohue.

By Kenny Howell

You're the Worst has always been an interesting show in the fact that it is a comedy, and the comedy is not the strength of it.

In fact, I think that the show thinks it is a lot funnier than it actually is. The terrible people angle is a hard one to pull off because at some point you can strain them to where your show loses credibility.

I think You're the Worst would if it didn't understand how to delve into real human problems and deal with them so well, whether it be depression, PTSD, etc.

Season four sees the aftermath of Jimmy's decision to abandon Gretchen right after proposing to her. He is out in the middle of nowhere watching TV shows from the library with an old man at a trailer park. She is living with Lindsay and is trying out crack. So things are not going well.

But Jimmy returns, stupidly expecting that there will be no repercussions from his actions. Of course, there are, and Gretchen puts him through hell for what he did. But of course this show is about the relationship between the two of them, so of course they are going to work towards being back together.

You're the Worst is at its best when it is dealing with just Jimmy and Gretchen because they are easily the two best characters and Aya Cash and Chris Geere are so good in the roles. I think it gets sidetracked with Edgar and Lindsay too often, and episodes like this year's one where Gretchen goes back home for the birth of her brother's child show how good the show can be when left in the two main stars' hands. This season is setting up the finale, which was recently announced to be season five. It maybe suffers from that aspect that this is the thing that happens before the thing, but still has maintained its quality through it.

Rating: **1/2
