Now on Netflix: Nocturama (2017)

Nocturama (2017) - Written and Directed Bertrand Bonello; Starring Martin Petit-Guyot, Finnegan Oldfield, Vincent Rottiers, Hamza Meziani.

By Kenny Howell

A group of teenage terrorist carryout several attacks on Paris before holding up in a mall in this French drama.

We don't really know why these kids do what they do, though there are a few discussions about being generally upset with the modern world, the powerful taking advantage of the weak, etc. They pull off a well-coordinated attack, setting off bombs and emptying out the French capital, then all meet up at the mall.

That is where most of the film takes place, as the kids just hang out, enjoy the goods available in the mall, talk about their lives, until the inevitable police presence, which they are naive about, comes knocking at their door.

Nocturama is an interesting look at how these kids handle themselves on that day, thinking they have it all figured out, thinking they did something good, obsessed just with themselves and material goods, when everyone knows their end will come at some point. On the flip side, nothing much happens. It feels a bit at times like you are watching idiot teenagers hang out, and of course that isn't on the top of my list of things to do.

However, it is an intriguing way to look at a story like this. Writer-Director Betrand Bonello could have gone politics heavy, action heavy, or anything sensationalist, but instead he looks at the children behind this, and how all their thought processes work during something of this magnitude. That is an examination worth having.

Nocturama is now streaming on Netflix.
