TV Review: Better Things, Season 2 (2017)

Better Things, Season 2 (2017) - Created by Pamela Adlon, Louis C.K.; Starring Pamela Adlon, Mikey Madison, Hannah Alligood, Olivia Edward, Celia Imrie.

By Kenny Howell

One of the better movements in TV the past few years is networks allowing comedians to create their own world from their voice.

It pretty much started with Louie, but has moved on to some great to very good works like Atlanta, Master of None, Lady Dynamite and One Mississippi.

Better Things definitely fits in that category, as it is very much its creator, Pamela Adlon. It's that same style, high concept episodes, no big through narrative, independent episodes that could stand on their own. She does it pretty well.

But there has always been something missing for me for the show. There are interesting episodes like in season 2 when she gets so frustrated and feels underappreciated that she has her kids throw a funeral for her just to see what they would say when she was gone. Or when they visit family in Canada and Pamela's Sam finds out she had an aunt she never knew she had.

There are definitely those episodes, the kids that play her daughters are good and Celia Imrie as her mother is horribly frustrating to everyone around her. It just never really comes together as well as it should. There are highs, no lows, but what's in between fills too much of the 10 episode season.

Rating: **1/2
