Now on Netflix: Little Evil (2017)

Little Evil (2017) - Written and Directed by Eli Craig; Starring Adam Scott, Evangeline Lilly, Owen Atlas, Sally Field, Tyler Labine, Donald Faison.

By Kenny Howell

Eli Craig takes on the tough task of trying to follow up his breakout film with this story about a stepdad who discovers his step son may be the Antichrist.

That tough act to follow was 2010's Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil, the hilarious film about a duo of hicks that go on a getaway in the woods that get blamed for the deaths of some college kids nearby. It is one of those that was little seen, but well worth searching out because it was just so clever, and Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk were great in the lead roles.

Little Evil, which comes a full seven years after that great film, isn't that witty. Laughs are actually at a minimum, which is a surprise because of the talent involved. It should be fun, and it is at times, it just isn't that much.

Adam Scott plays Gary, a real estate agent who just married Samantha (Evangeline Lilly). He has had trouble connecting with Samantha's son Lucas (Owen Atlas), a quiet little kid that can often be found staring menacingly with a sadistic goat puppet on his hand. Samantha of course thinks he can do no wrong, but Gary starts to wonder if that is true when Lucas' teacher jumps out of the window and impales herself after he tells her to go to hell.

That starts the story of whether Gary should eliminate Lucas, and how that might affect his relationship with Samantha. But he has to think about the possibility of the end of the world happening and all.

This should be a lot more fun than it is, but it never really gets over that hump despite some good things in place. There is a handful of laughs, but it mostly just made me want to go back and watch Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil.

Little Evil is now streaming on Netflix.
