Now on Hulu: Great News, Season 1 (2017)

Great News (2017) - Created by Tracy Wigfield; Starring Briga Heelan, Andrea Martin, Adam Campbell, Nicole Richie, John Michael Higgins, Horatio Sanz.

By Kenny Howell

Tina Fey and Robert Carlock definitely have a style and formula.

Great News, the NBC sitcom which was a midseason replacement earlier this year, resembles 30 Rock as it takes place within a workplace with a bunch of zany characters, and has the patter that has been prevalent through both that great work and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Jokes come fast and furious, many don't land, but some definitely do.

It just seems that since 30 Rock, the quality of this style has been on a downward trend. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is good, but it isn't quite 30 Rock. Great News also has its moments, but it is not quite Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Not to say there isn't a lot to like here. John Michael Higgins is excellent as the veteran news man trying to hold on to his integrity. But he isn't the focus, that would be Briga Heelan's Katie, a producer trying to make a name for herself who happens to very Liz Lemon-ish. She's good at her job, but she's also a bit of a mess. However, she is not nearly as much as some of the people around her. Things are thrown for a loop when her overbearing mother, played by Andrea Martin, is brought on as an intern at the news studio to help out.

There are some solid laughs here, but it isn't earth shattering comedy by any means. It still has room to grow because there is a solid cast here. It's just not quite its predecessors just yet.

The entire first season of Great News is now streaming on Hulu. Season 2 premieres Sept. 28.

Rating: **1/2
