Now on Netflix: Message from the King (2017)

Message from the King (2017) - Directed by Fabrice du Welz; Written by Oliver Butcher, Stephen Cornwell; Starring Chadwick Boseman, Teresa Palmer, Luke Evans, Tom Felton, Alfred Molina.

By Kenny Howell

A revenge thriller goes pretty dark to cover up the fact that it is kind of bland in this new Netflix thriller.

Chadwick Boseman (Captain America: Civil War) plays a South African man who comes to Los Angeles to search for his missing sister.

It becomes apparent rather quick that she has been murdered, so he spends his time, with a little bit of help from a local girl named Kelly, played by Teresa Palmer (Hacksaw Ridge). He gets into the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles, and finds the people that had something to do with his sister's demise.

Message from the King is a story we have seen many times before, and it doesn't really do much to separate itself from better stories that we have seen. The fight scenes aren't all that great, the darkness it strives for is definitely pretty bleak, but there just isn't that disgusting tone built throughout the film that should be there. Boseman, as usual, is quite good, and Palmer does well, though the two never really get a ton of chemistry together, something the movie doesn't really know if it wants to establish.

Message from the King isn't a bad movie, it just feels like it's all been done before. It's that perfect middle that many Netflix originals have found over the past few years. It's not something you would ever pay to see in the theater, but it's something that you would watch because it is there on Netflix, something you are already have anyway for better stuff.

Message from the King is now streaming on Netflix.
