Now on Hulu: Casual, Season 3 (2017)

Casual, Season 3 (2017) - Created by Zander Lehmann; Starring Michaela Watkins, Tommy Dewey, Tara Lynne Barr, Katie Aselton, Frances Conroy, Judy Greer, Chace Crawford.

By Kenny Howell

Casual is so appropriately named because it perfectly captures the space that it lives.

It's not the best show on TV, it's not necessarily bad, Michaela Watkins (The House) is terrific, but it just never makes that leap into something you seek out.

I think it lies with the fact that it is essentially a dysfunctional family dramedy, but the family isn't all that dysfunctional. They have their problems, just like everyone else, but they never get really close to rock bottom, and at times you wonder why you should even care.

It makes it difficult to really get too invested in them, except maybe for Watkins' Valerie, and most of that comes from how good she is. Valerie is once again wandering in season 3, trying to move on from the fact that she and her brother Alex helped their father kill himself after battling an illness. That is thrown for a loop when her crazy mother (Frances Conroy) lets it loose in his eulogy that he wasn't Valerie's real dad.

Alex (Tommy Dewey) is running out of money from selling off his stake in his company, so he takes a job as an IT guy at a company where he clicks with the boss there, played by Judy Greer (All We Had). Valerie's daughter Laura (Tara Lynne Barr) is trying to get a tattoo removed, so she takes a job trying to get activist signatures, where she meets someone who changes her views on things.

As you can tell, Casual doesn't try to do too much, but it seems pretty cognizant of that. It handles it well, it just never lifts itself being anything other than casual viewing.

All three seasons of Casual are now streaming on Hulu.

Rating: **1/2
