Now on Amazon Prime: Paterson (2016)

Paterson (2016) - Written and Directed by Jim Jamursch; Starring Adam Driver, Golshifteh Farahani, Rizwan Manji.

By Kenny Howell

I guess I am just not one of the cool kids that gets it.

Jim Jamursch's last two films, Only Lovers Left Alive and this one about a bus driver/poet in Paterson, New Jersey have ended up on plenty of top 10 lists, some calling them masterpieces, but boring me beyond belief. There is dry, and then there is droll.

Here, a pretty good Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) is a bus driver by day, and a poet in his free time. His girlfriend spends her days painting things black and white and being weird, and encourages him to make copies of his poems, which he writes in one notebook. He wanders around Paterson and writes William Carlos Williams style poems, ones of which I have also have never got, so it makes a good pair.

That is literally all that happens, as he just encounters people, they don't really add anything, and he writes bad poems about matchsticks. Driver is good, Golshifteh Farahani is good, but they are lost in a whole lot of nothing. I think people must inject their own meanings in those empty spots, but I just got nothing.

Paterson is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
