I don't consider myself a Trekkie or anything like that, I actually just started watching the original series, but something doesn't feel right about Star Trek Beyond.

It's the same feeling I had with Star Trek Into Darkness, and that I ignored in the first in the rebooted franchise. It just doesn't feel like the Star Trek that I think works really well, the one that made it popular over its many TV series throughout the years. In those, the crew would go to a world, there would be some kind of issue that would have some kind of ethical or societal problem that it works through. Great sci-fi always deals with some kind of social issue an explores it in another worldly way.

These current run of films aren't like that, and I realize that a movie format doesn't lend itself to it as well. But they have become big budget action movies, and while they do have some inspired stuff, it's hard to separate itself from other basic space adventures out there. The only thing that makes it Star Trek is the uniforms, that ship and the classic characters, which are obviously played by different people nowadays.

In this one, the crew are attacked by a huge swarm that picks their ship apart and eventually destroys the Enterprise. Stranded on a nearby world, they must fight this new enemy named Krall (Idris Elba hid under heavy makeup), who super hates the Federation, with the help of a warrior named Jaylah (Sofia Boutella).

It just feels like we have already been here before, and it doesn't really take the series anywhere interesting. It's just kind of a continuation, and it doesn't feel too much like an event. The special effects and makeup are obviously great, and the cast are still pretty good. It just all seems played out and something we have seen before.

Star Trek Beyond is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
