Now on Netflix: Shimmer Lake (2017)

Shimmer Lake (2017) - Written and Directed by Oren Uziel; Starring Benjamin Walker, Wyatt Russell, Ron Livingston, Rob Corddry, Rainn Wilson, Stephanie Sigman, John Michael Higgins.

By Kenny Howell

A local sheriff tries to figure out who is behind a bank robbery gone wrong in this new Netflix thriller.

Shimmer Lake is told backwards, starting at the end of the week and inching back to the robbery and what happened. Zeke Sipes (Benjamin Walker) is the sheriff tasked with figuring out what happened. His brother Andy, played by Rainn Wilson, is involved in the incident, and that is just the tip of the iceberg, as the small town's history and many colorful characters could be connected to the crime.

Missed opportunities are abound in Shimmer Lake. It's told backwards, but I am not sure why exactly, other than that is can sell itself as a movie told backward. There is obviously a big twist at the end that you would expect from this kind of structure, and it is quite clever, but I don't know if it was worth it. You would think that each step back would reveal something in a big way, but it doesn't really, and it isn't until the last moments that we get that satisfaction we should be feeling throughout the film.

Plus, this is a film filled with comic talent, and was billed as a bit of a dark comedy, but those moments aren't there. You have Wilson, Rob Corddry, Ron Livingston, Adam Pally, John Michael Higgins, so you would expect with this style of story that there would be something like a Coen Brothers style of comedy (which may be not fair to compare), but it isn't there. Shimmer Lake never really goes over the top or has too much fun with its material. That leaves the viewer not having much fun as well.

Shimmer Lake is now streaming on Netflix.
