There is a certain set of summer action movies where you expect three to four big action set pieces, and then you just hope the stuff in between is enough to get you to the next big jaw dropping moment.

That has been pretty true of the Mission: Impossible series, which has been pretty successful more times than not. They have made the smart move of bringing in good filmmakers over its run like Brian DePalma, J.J. Abrams, Brad Bird and Christopher McQuarrie for this one. The action is going to be there, but what's in between is what is going to keep hanging around, and all of them have a pretty good handle on what that should be.

In this one, the fifth in the series, the IMF has been disbanded by a U.S. Senate Committee led by Alan Hunley, played by Alec Baldwin (Blue Jasmine). He thinks they are a danger, and Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) should be brought to justice. However, Hunt is good at what he does, and they can't keep their hands on him. In addition to escaping, Hunt is trying to destroy The Syndicate, a shadowy organization that is up to no good.

Per usual, there is plenty of double-crossing, big action scenes, and Simon Pegg (Man Up) bringing a bit of humor. There is also those astounding action scenes, particularly the opening scene which sees Cruise actually holding onto an airplane door which takes off (see poster above). It's what you come to expect with the series, and not much more. That's not necessarily a bad thing because it is one of the more consistently good series going right now, even five films into it. And that's more than you can ask for these days.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

Rating: **1/2
