Now on Amazon Prime: Me Before You (2016)

Me Before You (2016) - Directed by Thea Sharrock; Written by Jojo Moyes; Starring Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin, Janet McTeer, Jenna Coleman, Charles Dance.

By Kenny Howell

Some miscasting, and a bit formulaic story mars this movie about a woman who cares for a young paralyzed man.

Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) stars as Lou, an uniquely dressed young woman who loses her job, and must find work immediately. The only thing that she can really get is caring for a wealthy paralyzed man named Will, played by Sam Claflin.

Will was hit by a motorcycle while stepping out of work one day, and since his accident he has gone into a major depression in which he lashes out at and belittles everyone around him. He has gone through several caregivers when Lou arrives, and he makes her life miserable at first. He just wants to sit in his room and stare outside. And when Lou suggests otherwise, he berates her.

But, as you would imagine in a film like this, Lou softens him up and he begins to fall for her. But his condition is something he can't get past, and it is going to be hard to get past that knowing he will be stuck in his wheelchair, battling ailments, and wishing he could be more for her.

The problem with Me Before You starts with the casting of Emilia Clarke. Lou is an eccentric character, and I don't think Clarke has that in her. She is quite good in Game of Thrones, and can pull off the powerful and vulnerable. But I ended up being a bit annoyed by Lou, and that is trouble when you are supposed to love her as much as Will does, or at least see why he would.

What it does do well is not shy away from a very controversial issue, one of which I won't get into because it is important part of the conclusion of the film. Most of you probably know it because of how popular the book this was based off of was. They probably could have delved into it a bit deeper, but having the initiative to include it in a pretty mainstream romance is at least worth something.

Me Before You is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
