Now on Netflix: Man Up (2015)

Man Up (2015) - Directed by Ben Palmer; Written by Tess Morris; Starring Lake Bell, Simon Pegg, Sharon Horgan, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Rory Kinnear, Olivia Williams.

By Kenny Howell

Romantic comedies have seen about every possible meet cute situation possible over the years.

Now you are pretty much left with deconstructing the genre, spoofing, or hitting the high points.

Man Up, the 2015 film starring Simon Pegg (The World's End) and Lake Bell (In a World) does that last one, collecting two appealing leads and trying to get them to maximize those plot points you know it is going to hit and maybe having a little fun with it.

Bell plays Nancy, a woman in her thirties who is having trouble keeping it together. She meets a woman on the train that is headed to a blind date, and through a bit of happy circumstances, she poses as the blind date and meets Jack (Pegg). She plays along initially, pretending to be the woman that he was expecting, but you know that is going to fall apart at some point.

From there, Man Up really hits its stride, navigating the couple through one night with the scene chewing Bell (though her British accent is a bit distracting) and Pegg taking us along. It's not earth shattering by any means, but it is solid, and that is about all you can ask for these days when it comes to romantic comedies.

Man Up is now streaming on Netflix.

Rating: **1/2
