Now on Netflix: Dig Two Graves (2017)

Dig Two Graves (2017) - Directed by Hunter Adams; Written by Hunter Adams, Jeremy Phillips; Starring Ted Levine, Samantha Isler, Danny Goldring, Troy Ruptash, Rachael Drummond, Dean Evans, Bradley Grant Smith.

By Kenny Howell

Longtime character actor Ted Levine gets to show his chops in a leading part in this horror about a young girl trying to come to terms with the death of her brother.

That death opens the film, as a young girl named Jake, played by Samantha Isler (Captain Fantastic), prepares to jump into a quarry with her brother. They both go to jump, but Jake decides at the last minute not to go through with it. Her brother takes the big plunge and never resurfaces, his body never being found.

A little later, Jake is cornered by three weirdos who have a proposition for her. The lead one performs a magic trick, and says he has the power to bring her brother back from the dead. All she has to do is sacrifice someone else, someone they have picked out, a nerdy young man that has a crush on Jake. She declines, but the prospect of seeing her brother again slowly eats away at her conscious.

Her grandfather, played by Levine (The Silence of the Lambs), is a lawman and a tragedy in his past may be tied to those three men and even the death of her brother as well.

Dig Two Graves isn't really a horror film in the traditional sense of the word, more of a slow, occultish burn anchored by Isler and Levine. It is definitely original, but maybe a bit too glacially placed. I am all for letting things breathe, but I don't know if there is enough there to really justify it. Still, it's a worthwhile effort because of the unique touches Director Hunter Adams brings to it, and what the leads bring to the table. Just maybe a needed a bit more.

Dig Two Graves is no streaming on Netflix.
