Daddy's Home (2015) - Directed by Sean Anders; Written by Brian Burns, Sean Anders; Starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Linda Cardellini, Hannibal Buress, Thomas Haden Church, Bobby Cannavale, Bill Burr.

Will Ferrell is one of those actors that I will watch all his movies because even though there is a good chance that it will be garbage, there will be isolated moments of brilliance.

It may be one line, one scene, whatever, he just has a knack for selling those instances and making them memorable and quotable, no matter what the rest of the movie is like.

That is Daddy's Home in a nutshell. For the most part, it is a pretty bad story about a dad and step dad battling for the affection of their kids. One is super cool, obviously played by Mark Wahlberg (Patriots Day), and the other is the "nerd" or "wimp" played by Ferrell (The Lego Movie). It's stupid and not very funny for large chunks, but there is those moments where you can't help but laugh. It is probably why it got a sequel, something it didn't really deserve, just because it was just enough. He's a big name, and he is safe because he is always going to bring something.

Despite Ferrell doing most of the heavy comic lifting, the real star of the show may be Hannibal Buress (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising) as Wahlberg's friend, a contractor named Griff. He does his Hannibal Buress thing, which always works, and it is exactly the perfect compliment to a movie that needed a little something. Too bad the rest of it isn't up to his level.

Daddy's Home is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
