Now on Netflix: Blue Jay (2016)

Blue Jay (2016) - Directed by Alex Lehman; Written by Mark Duplass; Starring Mark Duplass, Sarah Paulson, Clu Gulager.

By Kenny Howell

Sarah Paulson and Mark Duplass walk the Before Sunrise path, but without the great locations in this nice little indie film.

Paulson (The People Vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story) and Duplass (The One I Love) play Jim and Amanda, former high school sweethearts that haven't seen each other in years. They bump into each other while at the grocery store, and immediately pick up where they left off.

They go visit to visit one of their old haunts, a little place called the Blue Jay, and tell the owner, who does remember them, that they have been married for 20 years. They then go back to Jim's place and reminisce about the good old days while fighting the attraction to each other. Amanda is now married, but the feelings for Jim are still there. The movie takes place over the night as they rekindle what they used to have.

The reason they split up comes up late in the film, and really gives the pair a time to show their acting range. While Paulson can do no wrong, Duplass struggles with the more intense emotional scenes, going probably a bit too far. His strength has always been his every man charm, and that definitely comes into play in the better parts of the film, when the two incredibly likable leads just get reacquainted. It makes Blue Jay exactly what the characters go through over the night, a pleasant time spent with likable people.

Blue Jay is now streaming on Netflix.
