Now on Netflix: 1 Night (2017)

1 Night (2017) - Written and Directed by Minhal Baig; Starring Anna Camp, Justin Chatwin, Isabelle Fuhrman, Kyle Allen, Kelli Berglund.

By Kenny Howell

Two couples spend the night going in opposite directions, a married couple with a relationship breaking apart, and a high school couple who are just falling for each other.

The Director Minhal Baig knows how to create the environment for this film with an eloquent opening scene as Anna Camp, one half of the married couple, narrates us into the film, setting the stage beautifully with a piano score backing her up.

However, the Writer Minhal Baig doesn't have the material enough to carry out this conceit. Obviously with the title, the film takes place over one night. That means lots of conversations, and some are so ridiculously strained. Camp (Cafe Society) is quite talented, but chewing up scenery is not her strong point. She is really good at accentuating a scene, and here she can't keep up with the more natural Justin Chatwin (Shameless), who probably deserves a bigger career than he has. They spend their time talking about the past, 1990s indie films, that night in Argentina, and just whatever they can squeeze in.

The young couple, played by Isabelle Fuhrman and Kyle Allen, are quite good, but again don't have much to work with. They are really the bigger draw of the film, as they feel more natural, they feel like kids falling in love, unlike Camp and Chatwin who seem like they are performing an off Broadway stage play. It makes it seem like something that was a good idea going in, but never really got fully realized.

1 Night is now streaming on Netflix.
