Brooklyn Nine-Nine has cemented itself over its first three seasons as one of the best casts on TV, and the writing staff has proven time and time again that it is adept at giving them all something worthwhile to do.

But 60 episodes is a long time, and eventually that is going to run stale. So Brooklyn Nine-Nine really shook things up in the fourth season, which just ended. The season started with things moved down to Coral Palms, Florida, as Jake (Andy Samberg) and Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) are in protective custody after going up against a big mob boss. Things then move back to Brooklyn, but with a caveat, as the crew goes to night shift. Things get back to normal later in the season, but then it is a thrown for another loop, a quite major one that leaves the season in a cliffhanger.

Despite all the changes, Brooklyn Nine-Nine still did what it did best at its core. The cast is top notch punctuated by the ever improving Melissa Fumero, and a broadening of the comedic range of Holt. The entire cast has at least one big story throughout the season, and gave the writers a lot to work with over that time. It might be their best season, and though it has never reached the heights of something like Parks and Recreation, co-creator Michael Schur's previous show, it might be inching ever closer.

All four seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine are now streaming on Hulu.

Rating: ***1/2
