Now on Netflix: Green is Gold (2016)

Green is Gold (2016) - Written and Directed by Ryon Baxter; Starring Jimmy Baxter, Ryon Baxter, Derek W. Adam.

By Kenny Howell

A young boy's father goes to prison, and he is forced to move in with his older brother who grows and sells weed in this indie drama.

Mason is troubled kid because of a deadbeat dad, and things get worse for him when he has to move in with Cameron. The two butt heads a bit because Mason is a typical kid that doesn't listen, and he hasn't really had any sort of parental figure to teach him any sort of responsibility. Plus, they are brothers, so naturally they don't get along.

Luckily for Mason, Cameron sells weed, which is excellent for building his skill sets. He gets a prescription for some plants, grows them, then sells them on to big buyers. Mason doesn't take to it too much at first, burning up a crop both by not taking care of it and also smoking it, but he gets the hang of it, and the two set out to sell a big batch.

Ryon Baxter wrote, directed and stars as Cameron in this, and you can tell it is a small indie fare. It would have benefited from a bit more budget which could have tightened things up a bit. As it is, it is kind of loose and a bit directionless, sort of like Mason, but not ideal for the viewers. It luckily stays short, which is a good move, but it feels like there should have been a bit more there.

Green is Gold is now streaming on Netflix.
