Movie Review: Keeping Up with the Joneses (2016)

Keeping Up with the Joneses (2016) - Directed by Greg Mottola; Written by Michael LeSieur; Starring Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm, Gal Gadot, Patton Oswalt, Matt Walsh.

By Kenny Howell

Keeping Up the Joneses takes and old premise, puts talented people in it, and tries to salvage what it can.

Zach Galifianakis (Masterminds) and Isla Fisher (Life of Crime) play Jeff and Karen, a suburban married couple who get some dashing new neighbors Tim and Natalie Jones, portrayed by Jon Hamm (A Young Doctor's Notebook & Other Stories)and Gal Gadot (Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice). Tim and Natalie are way overaccomplished, super attractive people, which instantly makes them stick out in the small suburban area where most of the people work for a tech company that has some secret government contracts. Jeff works there as well, but just in human resources.

Karen starts to get very suspicious of the Joneses when she finds Tim wandering around their upstairs and going into Jeff's office during a party. She then sees Natalie out in public do what she thinks is some kind of drop with a mysterious man. Come to find out, the Joneses are spies, and Jeff and Karen don't know if they are good or bad guys.

Of course, they are not bad guys because you couldn't get much out of it if they weren't. Since they are good, you can send Jeff and Karen along with them on missions. But they aren't supposed to be there, they aren't spies! They are just suburbanites!

The cast is the only saving grace as Galifiankis, Fisher and Hamm do what they can with the comedy part, and Gadot is proving herself to be one of the better action stars out there. They wring as much as they can of this dirty dish rag of a script, but it isn't nearly enough.

Rating: *1/2
