Now on Netflix: Fleming (2014)

The man who wrote Bond gets an examination of his early life in this BBC series now on Netflix.

Ian Fleming, played by Dominic Cooper (Summer in February), was a rich playboy with really no direction when his family connections and past get him a spot in the British military, sort of doing espionage against the Germans during World War II.

His self destructive personality puts his personal and professional life at risk, so he is as much battling that as he is the Germans. He cycles through women, caring for some of them, but he can't get out of his own way. When the British try to reign him in to follow missions, he can't do that very well either, though he does have some innovative ideas that get some results.

The miniseries, much like his Bond character, is over the top. There is a lot of sex in this, which isn't a problem, except for it seems forced at times to create a tone instead of tell a story. I don't think this needed to be so ostentatious to tell his story, but it definitely wants to create the feel that Fleming is Bond in a way, though he really isn't. Bond is an idealized version of what he would like to be. The real Fleming is a pretty complex character, and frankly kind of a jerk. It seems a bit much at times, but is an interesting look at the man behind the legend.

Fleming is now streaming on Netflix.
