Now on Netflix: Deidra & Laney Rob a Train (2017)

Deidra & Laney Rob a Train (2017) - Directed by Sydney Freeland; Written by Shelby Farrell; Starring Ashleigh Murray, Rachel Crow, Tim Blake Nelson, Missi Pyle, Sasheer Zamata, David Sullivan, Danielle Nicolet.

By Kenny Howell

A future high school valedictorian is forced to take some drastic measures when her mom goes to jail in this new comedy from Netflix.

Ashleigh Murray plays Deidra, a whip smart young lady who holds thing together when her mom flips out and ends up in jail. To keep from having her brother and sister to go to foster care, and to achieve her dream of going to college and getting away from her small Idaho town, Deidra must come up with a plan. She tutors students and other various things, but it isn't enough to keep with the huge bills that face her family every month.

She hears about people robbing passing trains one day, and a light bulb goes off. The tracks literally go right through her backyard, so access to trains are not the problem. Finding out how to get into the cars and gets the goods are the challenge, but Deidra obviously likes a problem to solve. She calls on her sister Laney (Rachel Crow) to help her get it done, as well as her estranged idiot dad (David Sullivan), who works on the rails.

Deidra & Laney Rob a Train does fall back on similar indie movie poverty tropes, like the fact that this is an idealized version of what growing up in poverty is like. This is supposed to be a hick town, but the kids are sharply dressed at school, and the existence of burnouts are not really anywhere to be seen. However, there is an infectious charm about it, especially from the leads Murray and Crow. You throw in some decent supporting work by Tim Blake Nelson (Blue Caprice), Missi Pyle, Sasheer Zamata and Sullivan, and it makes Deidra & Laney Rob a Train the light, pleasant experience it seems to be trying to achieve.

Deidra & Laney Rob a Train is now streaming on Netflix.

Rating: **1/2
