Now on Amazon Prime: Allied (2016)

Allied (2016) - Directed by Robert Zemeckis; Written by Steven Knight; Starring Brad Pitt, Marion Cotillard, Jared Harris, Lizzy Caplan, Matthew Goode.

By Kenny Howell

Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard are two of the most talented actors of our time, but together they lack any sort of spark in Allied, the latest World War II film from Robert Zemeckis.

Zemeckis (Flight) is trying to capture some of that Casablanca magic with a war time romance about two spies who are brought together for a mission and fall in love.

Pitt (The Big Short) is Max, a Royal Canadian Air Force Paratrooper who drops in the desert just outside of Casablanca to meet up with a French resistance fighter named Marianne, played by Cotillard (The Immigrant). He is supposed to be playing her long away husband, but their true mission is to assassinate a German official in Casablanca.

The mission is completed and the two move back to London together, get married, and start a family, despite World War II still going strong. However, a wrench is thrown into things when it is brought to Max that Marianne might be a German spy. He is supposed to eliminate her threat, but instead he seeks to prove her innocence.

Like I said, Pitt and Cotillard never really generate much on screen, and I think that more falls to Pitt in this case. He plays Max as very reserved, which I guess you could expect a spy to be, trying to play his cards close to his vest, but it results in just being dull. Cotillard tries her best to evoke something, as she always does, but it never comes. However, the story is pretty intriguing and Zemeckis gets the most out of the time period and setting. Just wish his stars would have brought it along with him.

Allied is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
