You don't usually associate cool with Marvel Comics.

That is coming from an avid comic reader like myself, but fun, exciting, dark, entertaining have all been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there hasn't been much which is the essence of cool.

That changes with Luke Cage, the most recent Marvel series to go to Netflix. The music, the look, the actors, they all have it down perfect, and it makes for a great start to the series.

Luke Cage, if you didn't know, is a man with indestructible skin. Bullets don't work on him, and he also happens to be incredibly strong. When we first meet him, he is doing odd jobs in Harlem trying to stay out of the limelight, but he can't let his ability go to waste when bad things start happening. That pulls him into Harlem's seedy underworld which is run by a corrupt club owner played by Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight). He is in cahoots with his cousin, a councilwoman played by Alfre Woodard (Mississippi Grind), and Cage aims to bring them down and rescue his city.

Unlike the other Marvel property released on Netflix this year, season two of Daredevil, Luke Cage has a clear focus, and it doesn't necessarily follow the path you think it will. The action is good, the actors are great, and while I don't think it is good as the first season of Daredevil, it has set itself up to possibly be the best series in the long run.

The entire first season of Luke Cage is now streaming on Netflix.
