Now on Netflix: Dreamland (2016)

Dreamland (2016) - Directed by Robert Schwartzman; Written by Benjamin Font, Robert Schwartzman; Starring Johnny Simmons, Frankie Shaw, Beverly D'Angelo, Amy Landecker, Jason Schwartzman, Noel Wells, Shay Mitchell.

By Kenny Howell

Jason Schwartzman's brother Robert brings this story of a pianist whose life spins out of control after an affair with an older woman.

Johnny Simmons (The To-Do List) plays Monty, a man who is going through a bit of a rough patch. He doesn't satisfy his girlfriend Liz (Frankie Shaw) any longer, partially because to make ends meet, they have to let her mother (Beverly D'Angelo) live with them. The bathroom to the cramped place is basically in their bedroom, and Liz's mother spends way too much time in there.

After picking up a gig at a fancy hotel whose name he can't even pronounce, Johnny meets Olivia, played by Amy Landecker (Transparent). Seeking an escape, he succumbs to her seduction and starts a bit of fling. His girlfriend does the same, and throws his home life into chaos.

There is nothing inherently wrong with Dreamland, there just isn't much there. It's a story we have heard before, and I am not sure Monty's story brings much more to it. It's not to say it's bad either, though I think the brilliant Landecker might have been wasted. It just kind of is, and that is OK if you just want something to kill the time.

Dreamland is now streaming on Netflix.
