Now on Netflix: Curse of the Man Who Sees UFOs (2016)

Curse of the Man Who Sees UFOs (2016) - Directed by Justin Gaar

By Kenny Howell

I should preface this review by saying I believe in aliens.

I don't know if they are alive now, or were in the past, or if they even have the capability to fly to Earth, but I do believe they are or have been out there. The universe is almost 14 billion years old and there are billions of planets out there, so the chances that one of those other ones have life now or sometime in the past 13.8 billion years is fairly probable.

So for me to think that someone seems crazy because they believe they see UFOs quite often on Earth would be sort of hypocritical. But the focus of the new documentary Curse of the Man Who Sees UFOs, a man named Cristo Roppolo, believes he sees them nightly in and around Monterey, California. This fact makes it to Justin Gaar, a documentary filmmaker, who is skeptical, but meets up with Cristo. Cristo shows him his Monterey, a place where he has been visited multiple times by aliens, and he films them almost every night. He shows him tons of footage that he has recorded over the years, which isn't totally convincing, but enough for Gaar to go along with it.

Cristo even takes Gaar out on his nightly filmings, where he follows light in the sky, some of which, you have to admit, are quite odd. There probably is an explanation, but you can see Cristo's argument enough to be intrigued. Especially if you want to believe.

The reason I prefaced this with the I believe in aliens thing is that it seems that Cristo does have some kind of disorder, something people would normally call "a little off". He is easily distracted, his mind races, and of course, he sees alien spaceships nightly. Gaar tries to make this into some kind of film about learning something about himself (he narrates part of the film which is kind of unnecessary), but really it is a portrait of a man that thinks and sees the world a bit differently. On that merit alone, it is at least worth spending time with him.

Curse of the Man Who Sees UFOs is now streaming on Netflix.
