Now on Netflix: The Watcher (2016)

The Watcher (2016) - Written and Directed by Ryan Rothmaier; Starring Erin Cahill, Edi Gathegi, Denise Crosby, Tracie Thoms.

By Kenny Howell

One twist too many mars an otherwise solid independent horror film from first time Director Ryan Rothmaier.

A young married couple named Emma and Noah, played by Erin Cahill and Edi Cathergi, find their dream home, and move in despite the realtor letting them know that someone died in the home. The details around that aren't totally known, so Emma and Noah don't really know what they are getting themselves into.

Even though they had to break the bank to get the house, it seems like the perfect fit at first. It's beautiful, and gives them room to grow if they decide to try again (Emma lost her first child) to have a family.

But things go south quickly when mysterious notes and packages start showing up with giant red Xs on them and the message "open me". There are demented things inside to try to dive them crazy, and Emma and Noah try to secure their house, but to no avail, to make it all end.

There is something constantly watching over them, trying to get them out of the house one way or the other. Whatever it is, it is all about birds, and may be a giant one itself. Creepy enough that you have someone watching you, but even worse when it could be a giant bird man that you are not sure is a supernatural being or just a crazy person.

The Watcher is pretty paint-by-numbers for the most part, solidly enough done, but nothing outstanding. The creep factor works pretty well until the mystery is revealed, and then things twist a bit more that seem just a bit unnecessary. If Rothmaier kept it simple, it would have been a little more successful, but it is competently done and worthwhile if you are a fan of the genre.

The Watcher is now streaming on Netflix.
