Now on Netflix: Marcella (2016)

Marcella (2016) - Directed by Charles Martin, Jonathan Teplitzky, Henrik Georgsson; Starring Anna Friel, Ray Panthaki, Nina Sosanya, Nicholas Pinnock, Sinead Cusack.

By Kenny Howell

The female detective at her wits end show is having its moment right now.

With shows like The Fall and this one starring the great Anna Friel, it is starting to become a genre. Here, Friel plays a detective who stepped away from 10 years when getting pregnant with her first child. She was in the middle of a murder investigation, but couldn't solve it, and stepped away to start a family.

After the time has passed, the same murderer seems to be still out there. She has had her own personal tragedies, struggled with it mightily, which leads to her husband leaving her as we start the show. But she tries to pull everything together to finally catch the killer she couldn't years ago.

Marcella is a fairly standard procedural, and it wouldn't work without Friel at the center. Her character is tough but broken, driven, but wanting to run away at times. She must fight against herself, but also her coworkers who don't necessarily trust her fragile psyche. When she herself and her ex-husband have connections to the case, it makes things even more complicated.

Marcella isn't earth shattering, but it does the job it sets out to do. Luckily they have Friel to take it there.

The first season of Marcella is now streaming on Netflix.
