It's hard to know how comedy that comes from a novelty type act will adapt itself to a TV series.

Flight of the Conchords worked (at least for awhile), but so many more have not. Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci (Easy), better known as the music comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates, are a novelty act, and I don't mean that as a slam. That is just their style, and they are very good at it. They have plenty of videos that have gone viral on YouTube, and of course that has got them other work in TV and movies.

In 2014, IFC took a gamble on them, and it paid off as the two explored things that has been in their act and deal with relationships, their own self confidence, the treatment of women in comedy, so and so forth. Unfortunately, after a very solid first season, IFC decided not to renew it for a second season because of low ratings.

It's OK, though I think it deserved a second season on quality, the season does stand on its own. I think they were trying to piece together longer story arcs by the end, but for the most part the stories are one offs. I usually don't like that, but it works here because Lindhome and Micucci mine a subject so well, then move on to another. It's unfortunate we won't get to see more, but that there is still that one season on Netflix is good news.

Garfunkel and Oates is now streaming on Netflix.
