Now on Netflix: Doctor Foster (2015)

Doctor Foster (2015) - Directed by Tom Vaughan, Bruce Goodison, Jeremy Lovering; Written by Mike Bartlett; Starring Suranne Jones, Bertie Carvel, Tom Taylor, Jodie Comer, Thusitha Jayasundera.

By Kenny Howell

A woman suspects her husband is cheating on her, and things spin horribly out of control in this terrific BBC series.

Suranne Jones plays the titular Doctor Foster. She is going along in her seemingly content life with a husband and son, a good job as a lead doctor at her practice, but little clues start to threaten that. First it is a long hair that is not hers on a piece of her husband's clothing, and that starts to unravel her.

Doctor Foster relies on the fact that at some point, things are going to come to a head. It hangs over you as it is set up for four episodes until things finally all come together in the final unbelievably good episode. I obviously won't give away what happens or how it is all set up, but it might be one of the most satisfying endings of any show this year. Things don't go where you think they go, but definitely where they should.

Part of the reason Doctor Foster works so well is the performance of Jones. She has to do a lot of heavy lifting, as she is in nearly every scene, and has to go through a wide array of emotions over the five episodes. She doesn't know how to process everything over the first few episodes, and goes through constantly changing feelings, whether she should just live with it, whether she should battle it, she is angry, scared, hurt. Jones is perfect, and one of the main reasons Doctor Foster works.

A second season is supposed to be coming this year, though I don't know where they go from here based on how the first season ends. I am intrigued because the show will have to go in a completely new direction, but with Jones leading the way, it will definitely be interesting.

Doctor Foster is now streaming on Netflix.
