When horror-comedies work, the creators are willing to go that extra step, that one that either disgusts, or a bust a gut laughing.

The willingness to go just a bit further lifts it above the standard are and into something special.

Crazyhead, the new Netflix series from Great Britain, does that, and by the end of its first six episodes, sees itself mentioned along side some of my favorites like Shaun of the Dead or Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil.

It is the story of an unusual friendship between Amy and Raquel. Raquel notices that Amy has a gift, one that Amy doesn't totally comprehend what it is, but has bothered her since childhood. Amy can see demons, much like Raquel, so she convinces her that she needs to start battling them along with her.

Needless to say, this is a hard pill for Amy to swallow, but it becomes very apparent when her best friend gets possessed in the first episode. The first scene of the season is a flash forward where we see Amy and Raquel trying to perform an exorcism to get Amy's friend back, but it goes horribly and hilariously wrong. We find out how they got to that point over the first episode, and just what this hidden world encompasses. After that Amy and Raquel discover that more demons are headed to Earth, and they need to team together to stop them.

While it does have some mildly gory moments, Crazyhead works because it is very funny. Cara Theobold and Susan Wokoma as Amy and Raquel are an excellent team, and are perfect, physically comic guides through the demon apocalypse that is trying to take over the world. They bring along Amy's perverse co-worker Jake (Lewis Reeves), who is very much in love with her, along the way and the trio squeeze every little laugh they can get out of every situation. It's a super fun series, and I look forward to see how they keep it going in the second season.

Crazyhead is now streaming on Netflix.
