Now on Netflix: Alleycats (2016)

Alleycats (2016) - Directed by Ian Bonhote; Written by Anthea Anka, Ian Bonhote, Max Kinnings, Simon Uttley; Starring Eleanor Tomlinson, Sonoya Mizuno, John Hannah, John Lynch, Hera Hilmar, Sam Keeley.

By Kenny Howell

A bike messenger witnesses a possible murder, and that sends him and his friends head first into a big conspiracy in this forgettable thriller.

There is nothing exceptionally wrong about Alleycats, there just isn't much all that right. It is led by a quite magnetic lead in Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark), but the mystery is not really there, and the whole bicycle thing is kind of a bit silly, something that would really appeal to 13-year-olds, which this might be aimed. Premium Rush tried to do it a few years ago with mixed success, but that at least had Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon. I mean, Alleycats is about young people that do illegal bike races, which apparently is a thing. They do them all over U.S., and I guess they can be dangerous. However, it's hard to take it too serious as being edgy because it is just a bunch of people having fun, riding their bikes.

Tomlinson plays Danni, the sister to Chris, the young man that witnesses the murder. When Chris is run over by the people he accidentally came upon while delivering the package, Danni digs deeper to see if she can get to the bottom of it. You won't be surprised that it possibly goes all the way to the top.

Alleycats is never really all that intriguing, but Tomlinson does what she can to make it so. For her sheer presence, I can almost forgive everything else, but that is quite the tall order.

Alleycats is now streaming on Netflix.
