Now on Netflix: Abandoned (2015)

Abandoned (2015) - Directed by John Laing; Written by Stephanie Johnson; Starring Dominic Purcell, Peter Feeney, Owen Black, Greg Johnson.

By Kenny Howell

Abandoned is kind of one of those movies that wouldn't totally work unless it was based on a true story.

Luckily for this film, it is. Abandoned is about a group of men who left the coast of New Zealand to go on a sailing adventure, but bad weather capsizes their boat fairly early into the trip.

They are able to rig the upside down boat enough to keep it afloat, but it drifts off so far that they have no idea where they are. They are out there for 119 days, so some believe they have almost reached the coast of South America when they finally wash up ashore.

The movie seems pretty based in fact and stays away from sensationalizing things too much. The men obviously face hardships during the trip, but it isn't until well into the trip that there lives are very at risk.

I think they could have really hammered home a little better just how long these guys were out there, because reminding you of that fact really sells the film. It is a made for TV movie, so the acting, writing, etc., are definitely of that ilk, so you need to really sell your strong points. I can't imagine being out at sea at all, let alone for that long, and the fact that they were able to stay relatively calm and wait it out while staying positive is beyond me. When they returned, some thought they made up the incident, which prompted a full investigation.

Abandoned is now streaming on Netflix.

Rating: **1/2
