The world was reintroduced to Hannibal Lector (after 1986's Manhunter) in 1991 to a blockbuster and critical success. Jonathan Demme’s thriller about the cannibal doctor won the Best Picture Oscar and the film still holds up today.

It follows the story of Clarice Starling played by Jodie Foster (Elysium), a new FBI agent, who must consult with Lector to help catch a serial killer who captures overweight women. Buffalo Bill, starves them then skins them in the hopes of making him a nice skin body suit. Lector is pure, persuasive evil, and Starling most learn how to manage him as he digs into her psyche, while also catching the killer.

Well adapted from the writing of Thomas Harris, mostly cause of Demme’s adept handling of the work and the performances of the two leads, Foster and Anthony Hopkins (Hitchcock). Both won Oscars, but Foster was smart enough to not revisit the franchise, while Hopkins went on to make the disappointing Hannibal and the pretty good Red Dragon.

The Silence of the Lambs is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
