Now on Amazon Prime: Before Sunrise (1995)

Before Sunrise (1995) – Directed by Richard Linklater; Written by Richard Linklater and Kim Krizan; Cinematography by Lee Daniel; Starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.

By Kenny Howell

The film that started it all for Jesse and Celine, Richard Linklater introduced the couple that was meant to be together back in 1995.

At that time, Jesse was just an American tourist/wannabe writer who was traveling through Europe. He meets Celine, and the two instantly strike up a conversation. Feeling a spark, Jesse convinces Celine to spend the day in Vienna with him, and the two fall deeper for each other, even though they know that there are so many boundaries that could keep them apart at the end of the trip.

Linklater, Hawke and Delpy made two more films after this, Before Sunset, which is set 10 years after this where they finally are able to act on their relationship, and roughly another 10 years after that, we got Before Midnight where they are married but their relationship is starting to show cracks. All three are terrific films mostly because of the spark between Hawke and Delpy who just have that "it" factor. It's like Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, the camera just comes on, and they light it up, there is instantly a movie there. It also a perfect examination of a relationship in its fullest, the exciting part at the beginning, the moment when it finally becomes a thing, and the tough reality of trying to make it work. It's quite a masterpiece of films from Linklater.

Before Sunrise is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

Rating: ***1/2
