Netflix TV Review: The Returned, Season 1 (2012)

The Returned, Season 1 - Created by Fabrice Gobert; Starring Anne Consigny, Clotilde Hesme, Frederic Pierrot.

By Kenny Howell

The Returned falls under one of those shows that was on my list to watch, mostly because of all the high praise I had read.

But for whatever reason, it just slipped through the cracks. That is very unfortunate as it turns out.

The Returned is as good as anything I have seen in awhile, especially the pilot episode, which may be one of the better starts to a series I have seen. Rarely do TV shows hit the ground running so well, Mad Men the only one that really pops in my head right off. Possibly The Sopranos as well.

The returned in The Returned are people that have passed away at various points in the past that come back to their small French town all at once. Chief among them is Camille, a teenager who was killed when her bus fell over the side of a mountain during a school field trip. About three years after the tragedy, Camille strolls back into town to her still grieving family, shaking up everything they know about the world.

Each episode is named after a character who furthers the mystery of the returned people. After Camille's pilot episode, we meet Simon, a young man who died under odd circumstances, leaving his fiancee behind. From there, we examine a character each episode, some returned, some not, who further the story in a brilliant way.

If you can't tell, I am being extremely vague about The Returned. It's for your own good because they more I tell, the less fun the whole series is. As I found out, it's best going in fresh, and turns out to be another foreign show that is way better than the crappy American remake we subsequently got. Check this one out instead.
