Now on HBO: Spy (2015)

Spy (2015) - Written and Directed by Paul Feig; Starring Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law, Rose Byrne, Allison Janney, Morena Baccarin, Jason Statham, Bobby Cannavale.

Melissa McCarthy is a spy. That is kind of obvious from the title.

And that is really all there is to Spy, from Writer-Director Paul Feig, who worked previously with McCarthy on Bridesmaids and The Heat.

McCarthy plays CIA analyst Susan Cooper. Her job is to help agents in the field, in particular Bradley Fine (Law), the suave super agent that she has a crush on. Well, he gets killed by the evil Rayna Boyanov (Byrne), and Cooper convinces her bosses that she is the right person to track down Boyanov. Boyanov knows all the agents' names and faces, but Cooper has never been in the field, so she will move in unrecognized.

McCarthy is a super talented comedienne, so there are plenty of funny moments, and the supporting cast complements her well. Jason Statham as a tough super agent who has met all kinds of peril in his days has some of the funniest lines.

But there is a feeling like I have seen this all before. It's that same Feig-ian style where they slam so many jokes in the movie that occasionally the story stops so the characters can have a little improvisational battle. Not to say they aren't funny lines, but it halts the narrative, and takes you out of the movie. Still, McCarthy does enough to keep it afloat and make it a little better than most comedies these days.

Spy is currently playing on HBO.
