Movie Review: Everybody Wants Some (2016)

Everybody Wants Some - Written and Directed by Richard Linklater; Starring Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin, Ryan Guzman, Zoey Deutch.

By Kenny Howell

Richard Linklater returns to Texas once again for a trip back to his younger years in this comedy about a college baseball team preparing for the new year.

Baseball is just a small part of the film, which focuses on the team in the days before classes start in August 1980. They spend their time mostly chasing girls, drinking and doing what college kids do.

The young man entering this world is Jake, a freshman pitcher that walks into the team house as the movie begins. The house had been given to the team by the school to help with overcrowding, so there are rules like no drinking and no girls upstairs, which of course the guys try to obey, but not very hard. The team of eccentric characters welcome him and instantly show him what they spend most of their time doing while not on the diamond.

The movie is somewhat considered a follow up to Dazed and Confused, though the only real connection is style. I never really liked that film all that much. It is perfectly fine, but I didn't really connect with the time period and stoner vibe. Everybody Wants Some is a little more in my wheelhouse, growing up in the 80s and also playing sports. It's the same kind of set up as that earlier film, as it takes place in a short period of time, and there isn't much of a story, we just are invited on the adventures of these guys. That makes it a bit repetitive (it could have been trimmed), but the guys are all entertaining in their own enough so to keep it going through the two hour run time.

Rating: ***
