Now on Starz: Deliver Us From Evil (2014)

Deliver Us From Evil (2014) - Directed by Scott Derrickson; Written by Derrickson, Paul Harris Boardman; Starring Eric Bana, Olivia Munn, Joel McHale, Edgar Ramirez.

By Kenny Howell

There has been a ton of exorcism movies through the years, so if you are going to approach that subject, you need to come with something original.

Deliver Us From Evil doesn't really do that. It instead brings us Eric Bana's bad New York accent, awkward buddy cop talk between Bana and McHale, music from The Doors that is supposed to be scary (?) and nothing really that even comes close to giving some kind of jolt.

The filmmakers are taking the same approach as the makers of The Conjuring and adapting a book from a person who says they have dealt with evil spirits in some way. This one is about New York police officer Ralph Sarchie, who starts to investigate bizarre, sadistic crimes, some of which involve children. As it unfolds, it seems there is a demon element to it, so he reluctantly joins forces with a priest to cast out the demon.

Also, Sarchie is overworked and stressed out, which hurts his family life because that is necessary in a cop movie. It can't be a cop movie without it.

As I mentioned up top, there is really nothing new to this. It's all been done before, so it is hard to conjure some scares from something you know is coming. Go watch The Conjuring again if you want to go down this road.

Deliver Us From Evil is now playing on Starz.
