Now on Netflix: Butter (2012)

Butter (2012) - Directed by Jim Field Smith; Written by Jason A. Micallef; Starring Jennifer Garner, Yara Shahidi, Ty Burrell, Olivia Wilde, Rob Corddry, Alicia Silverstone, Hugh Jackman, Ashley Greene.

By Kenny Howell

Butter tries so hard to show you how edgy it is, it forgets to be clever and funny in the process.

It is the story of a butter carving contest in small town Iowa, and the crazy contestants that inhabit it. In someone else's hands, it could have been good, but it never really takes off in the hands of Director Smith (She's Out of My League).

Jennifer Garner plays an ambitious backstabber, Laura, much in the vein of Tracey Flick from Election. When her husband, Bob (Burrell), is asked to step down from the butter carving contest, something he has dominated for years, Garner takes his spot because it is their family's legacy. But an adopted girl (Shahidi) shows true promise, and enters the contest. Also, Olivia Wilde is a stripper who joins the contest after she has sex with Bob for money, just because she despises Laura, and also she hasn't received her money for the sex.

Garner and Wilde are the only ones that really get to show their comedic chops, but Garner is very unlikable and a redemption at the end seems forced. Wilde's character really doesn't have much to do in the movie except be a foul-mouthed stripper. She doesn't advance the story really in any way. Rob Corddry is an extremely funny guy, but he basically plays the straight man here.

Big laughs are at a minimum, but there are a few chuckles. It doesn't make it worth it.

Butter is currently streaming on Netflix.
