It's that old story again, an entomologist works through the complications of a lesbian submissive fetishistic relationship.

Cynthia studies butterflies, and in her down time, she likes to dominate her lover, Evelyn. Evelyn enjoys being demeaned in different ways. In the opening, we see her pretending to be a maid, and Cynthia pretends to be her employer, telling her she is doing a terrible job, then escalating it from there.

For awhile, that seems like that is all the movie is about. For a long while actually. Evelyn's tastes grow in ways that are uncomfortable to Cynthia, and the dynamics of the relationship change. That change is the most intriguing part of the film. Peter Strickland does give the film a gorgeous look, and the two leads are quite good, it just takes awhile to really get where it is going.

The Duke of Burgundy is now streaming on Netflix.
