The great thing about independent film is that you get to see different worlds, different lives lived, different viewpoints on screen from what you would normally see.

The downfall of that is that with the reduced money and time, there are all kind of constraints to the production, and you can't really get that completely polished effort you need to get.

That is how I feel about Runoff, the new drama about a farm family trying to survive as the possibility of being pushed off of their land. Add to that there is an illness in the family, and the pressure starts to mount on the matriarch of the family, Betty (Joanne Kelly). There is a possibility that she can strike a deal with another farm that would save them, but it seems obstacle after obstacle comes their way. Betty is then forced to do what she has to do to save her family.

What I appreciate about Runoff is that it shows a world that we wouldn't normally see. There aren't a lot of Hollywood dramas out there about a farm family trying to survive, and if there was it would be highly romanticized or political. This is a story about a family, plain and simple, and it is a good one. It just never is able to separate itself from the pack of independent films that are out there dealing with small issues such as this. Still worth checking out if you are in the mood for a small indie.

Runoff is now streaming on Netflix.
