What is more awkward than adolescence? How about trying to find your artistic voice at the same time?

Bobo and Klara are best friends trying to get through middle school, or whatever Sweden's version of that is. They believe themselves to be hardcore punks, a genre of music that is being replaced in popularity by the disco scene. This, of course, gets them picked on because of their spiked hair and crazy antics.

So what better way to rebel then to start a punk band, talking about all the stuff that pisses you off like being forced to participate in sports when you hate it. Problem is that neither know how to play instruments, and another band in the school eats up all the time in the rehearsal room.

After fighting for time in the room, Bobo and Klara, reach out to Hedvig, another fellow outcast who is a Christian classical guitarist who always gets booed at the school talent show despite her tremendous talent. After much convincing, the three start jamming together, and come together as a group.

This is obviously a coming of age movie, and a very good one at that. It is at its best when it mixes the everyday foibles of growing up with three kids trying to find their artistic voice. No matter what your upbringing was, you can connect with these girls, as they try to figure themselves out. Particularly great is Mira Barkhammar as Bobo. She is constantly in Klara's shadow, as she lacks the confidence that Klara has. Part of becoming a punk star is overcoming that, and I feel like she had farther to go. Barkhammar handles it perfectly, and is really the driving force for the movie.

We are the Best! is currently streaming on Netflix.
