Now on Amazon Prime: Blue Ruin (2014)

Blue Ruin (2014) - Written and Directed by Jeremy Saulnier; Starring Macon Blair, Devin Ratray, Amy Hargreaves.

By Kenny Howell

Blue Ruin has a killer idea behind, a normal dude tries to get revenge, but he is just a regular guy, so the revenge doesn't go so smoothly. The execution just doesn't quite hammer that home.

Dwight is kind of a crazy loner, almost like a lost puppy, scrounging for whatever he can. We find out that his parents were murdered when he was younger and the killer is getting out of jail.

Seeking vengeance, he sets out to kill the man. Problem is, he is kind of like most of us would be in that situation, kind of terrible. He does kill the man, though it is not smooth as he probably would have liked. In addition, he has royally pissed off the killer's people, and they come to hunt him down. That puts his family, specifically his sister, in jeopardy because they could kill her to get back at him.

Dwight bumbles his way through the proceedings, trying to kill the people that are after him while protecting his family. He reaches out to a friend from the past for help, and sets out to finish the business.

I think that Blue Ruin could have gone farther. I like the idea of an assassin who is pretty bad at revenge, but I think Writer-Director Jeremy Saulnier could have gone further off the rails. There is also a kind of inconsistent tone. I think the aspects that were funny could have landed a little better, and I don't think it really gelled with the rest of the movie, even though it should have.

All that aside, I think Blue Ruin is a pretty solid little indie, and worth at least checking out. It has some cool stuff working for it. Jeremy Saulnier's second film, Green Room, really comes into shape and has been one of the better films of 2016.

Blue Ruin is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
