Now on Amazon Prime: Therese (2013)

Therese (2013) - Directed by Claude Miller; Written by Miller, Natalie Carter; Starring Audrey Tautou, Gilles Lellouche, Anais Demoustier, Catherine Arditi, Isabelle Sadoyan.

By Kenny Howell

When your main character does something horrible, you better have a good reason why they did.

That is something that Therese, starring French star Audrey Tautou (Amelie), fails to do. She plays the title character, a married woman that slowly poisons her husband, and we never really know why. She is unhappy because the guy is kind of a crap husband, and she lacks any kind of passion for life any longer. But is that enough to nearly murder him?

We start when Therese is young. Her and her buddy Anne dream of the future when they get married and go on to happy lives. Therese marries Bernard (Lellouche), and gets pregnant pretty quickly. Anne falls in love with a young man, but it doesn't end well, and she doesn't get married as early as Therese.

It is very apparent early on that the life that Therese dreamed of is not there. Depression sets in quickly, which leads to her actions. Bernard has heart problems, so the doctor prescribes a few drops of arsenic in his water to help him. Therese starts adding a few more drops, and Bernard's health drops quickly.

Everyone in the cast is quite good, and the film is shot very well, but it's hard to get involved with the character when you can't get behind her motivation or lack thereof.

Therese is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
