Now at Netflix: Broken City (2013)

Broken City (2013) - Directed by Allen Hughes; Written by Brian Tucker; Starring Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jeffrey Wright, Barry Pepper, Alona Tal, Kyle Chandler, Griffin Dunne.

By Kenny Howell

It's a difficult line to walk when you are dealing with a main character that is not totally on the up and up.

Billy Taggart (Wahlberg) is kind of one of those guys. A couple of years back he was forced to leave the police force because he shot a criminal on duty that didn't necessarily warrant gunshots. The dude did something horrendous, but Taggart just opened fire on him when he could have just been taken into custody.

Luckily for him, the city is broken, hence the title. The Mayor, Nicholas Hostetler (Crowe), made some important information disappear, so Taggart did not go to jail. But the Mayor said they couldn't have him being on the force any longer.

Present day, Taggart is now a private investigator, but business isn't going great. Hostetler comes back into his life, hiring him to spy on his wife, who he thinks may be cheating on him. Things go a little deeper, obviously, and a man on the staff of a rival Mayoral candidate turns up dead.

The real problem is not necessarily Wahlberg's character. He toes the line occasionally, and it's a little hard to go along with him. The real problem is the crime that Taggart is trying to solve. There isn't much to it, and there isn't much surprise about how it unfolds. It makes it hard to get lost in the story. The cast is impressive, and do good work, there just isn't a lot there.

Rating: *1/2
