Now at Netflix Instant: Jack Reacher (2012)

Jack Reacher (2012) - Written and Directed by Christopher McQuarrie; Starring Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Werner Herzog, Robert Duvall.

By Kenny Howell

There is something fun about watching a character beat up people who don't think they can beat them up.

I don't know why it excites me every time, because it is something that is done in countless movies, but it always gets me going.

That is the high points of this Tom Cruise vehicle that seems like it was trying to get a franchise started, something it probably won't achieve. But that doesn't mean the Chirstopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) screenplay is not a lot of fun at times.

Cruise plays the title character, a former military policeman that disappears off the radar whenever he wants, and surfaces when he wants to be found. A sniper has killed five people in Pittsburgh, and the guy that is arrested for the killings is saying that authorities need to talk to Reacher. Reacher comes to them before they have a chance to reach out to him and begins investigating the crime with defense attorney Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike, The World's End). Obviously, things are not what they seem, or otherwise we wouldn't have much of a mystery.

Cruise is old hat at this type of movie, and he plays the title character with same bravado he has for years. The action scenes are good, the script is clever, it just maybe takes too many twists and turns before its final conclusion. It starts to border on the absurd, but Cruise keeps it grounded, making it a worthwhile endeavor.

Rating: **1/2
